Sunrocket Subscribers: Here are Some Alternatives

It saddens me to hear the news of Sunrocket broadband phone service closing its doors. And it really makes me furious to hear that they shut down without notifying a single customer! If you are one of the 200,000 + Sunrocket subscribers, I am deeply sorry to hear that you lost your service without warning and so suddenly. You are likely seeking out a good alternative to your Sunrocket VoIP service right now, and it’s understandable that you would be a bit apprehensive about choosing your next provider – I would be too!

There are some good alternatives out there, but with so much shakeup going on in the VoIP market these days it’s hard to know which VoIP provider to choose. Vonage and AT&T are both caught up in some legal issues regarding copyright infringement. Vonage is also on shaky ground with finances. Although I believe these two companies will come out ok in the end, I would recommend steering clear of these providers at the moment – until the dust settles a bit.

Two very good options to consider are Voip.com and Packet8. Both have a $199 annual plan, neither are involved in any big expensive lawsuits and both companies are financially stable. I have personally used Packet8 for over 2 years and am extremely pleased with their service. Another good VoIP company to look at is Lingo, particularly if you have international calling needs. Someone left a comment on my earlier post today with a recommendation for Inphonex. I am not familiar with this provider, but you may want to check them out.

Following is an excerpt from an email I got this afternoon from Telebay, a marketing company that provides affiliate marketing services for both Voip.com and Packet8.

“Though we are saddened to see SunRocket go... this is a great time to take advantage of the situation and provide your customers with an alternative, from a financially stable company: Packet8. As many of you know, even Vonage is having major problems now.

We say the following because we believe it to be true -- not because we happen to offer VoIP from both of these companies -- but Packet8 and Voip.com are currently the most financially stable voips out there.

We have been told that they are going to be paying all debts and that this should include debts to their agents. We will, of course, press for this and pay you what you are owed after receipt.”

I am glad to hear that Sunrocket intends to pay off all their debts, as I am/was an agent for Sunrocket and they owe me some money too. I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for this to happen, but it would be nice to see them pay what is owed. I hope that Sunrocket intends to refund money owed to all its customers too!
